BASL and BASLNF Annual Meeting 2007 - Imperial College London

The 2007 Annual meeting of the British Association of the Study of the Liver and BASL Nurses Forum was held in Imperial College , South Kensington Campus, London . The local organiser was Prof Mark Thursz.

The meeting attracted over 220 registrants over 3 days. The meeting was preceeded by the founding meeting of the British Viral Hepatitis Group. The premeeting followed on the topic of "Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease". The clinical symposium on “The care of the cirrhotic patient" incorporated the British Liver Trust Lecture by Dr Alex Gimson, Cambridge, UK entitled "Referral for Transplantation" outlined the development of the UKELD scoring system for patients with chronic liver disease. The Basic Science Workshop entitled “Cholangiocyte biology” also included the Ralph Wright lecture by Prof. Gianfranco di Alpini, Texas , USA entitled "Autocrine regulation of cholangiocyte growth by VEGF". Over 20 oral and 100 poster presentations were heard.

BASL and BASLNF Annual Meeting 2006 - Dublin

The 2006 Annual meeting of the British Association of the Study of the Liver was held in Trinity College, Dublin. BASL welcomed many nationally and internationally renowned speakers to Dublin for a highly successful meeting.

Over 250 registrants attended the sessions covering "Interventional Hepatology" and "Liver cell biology in the post-genomic era". Continuing the importance that BASL places on nurturing the development of hepatology reserchers, 2 afternoon sessions allowed oral presentation of 25 abstracts. In addition 100 poster presentations were displayed.

One of the scientific highlights was the presnetation of the Dame Sheila Sherlock research prize to Dr Fiona Oakley for her work on stellate cell biology. Dr Oakley then presented a summary of her work. The BASL nurses forum held their second meeting which was very well attended and included discussion of a veriety of topics including alcoholic liver disease, HCC and viral hepatitis. The meeting was not all work and no play with the delegates enjoying a wine reception and dinner in the elegant rooms of the Royal College of Surgeons.
