British Viral Hepatitis Group (BVHG)

The BVHG aims to improve the management and study of patients with chronic viral liver disease. The group brings together UK hepatologists, gastroenterologists, infectious disease physicians as well as virologists and epidemiologists with an interest in viral diseases of the liver.

The BVHG held a founders meeting at the 2007 BASL meeting in London, where it was agreed to set up a steering committee and to develop committees that will develop UK guidelines for the future management of patients with viral infections of the liver.

Professor Graham Foster (Chairman)

Graham Foster is the Professor of Hepatology at Barts and The London School of Medicine and a consultant hepatologist at Barts and The London NHS Trust in East London.. He trained in Medicine at Oxford and London Universities in the 1980s and completed a PhD in Molecular Biology in 1992. Professor Foster has a long standing interest in the management of chronic viral hepatitis and runs a clinical research program studying the natural history of viral hepatitis, its impact upon patients and their communities and novel therapies for this disease. He supervises a laboratory research program investigating the mode of action of the different type I interferons. He is the sub-editor of The Journal of Viral Hepatitis and has published widely in the field of viral liver disease. He is a member of a number of patient advocacy groups and is a member of the UK Department of Health Advisory Group on Hepatitis.

Dr Jane Collier

Dr Matthew Cramp

Dr Matthew Cramp is a Consultant Hepatologist at Derriford Hospital, an Honorary Reader with the Peninsula Medical School and Clinical Director of the Peninsula Hepatology Network. The network has been instrumental in establishing specialist liver services and has been closely involved in developing and coordinating hepatitis C treatment in the southwest region. His research interests include defining mechansims of protection from HCV infection and clinical studies in viral hepatitis.

 

Dr Andrew Freedman

Andrew Freedman has been Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Infectious Diseases at University Hospital of Wales since 1994, and Head of the Section of Infectious Diseases at Cardiff University Medical School since 2004. His research interests include the haematological effects of HIV infection as well as clinical studies in HIV and hepatitis C. He was a member of the DoH Expert Advisory Group on AIDS 1997-2006. He is on the Executive of the British HIV Association and is Vice-Chair of its Hepatitis working group.

 

Dr Andrew Irving

Dr Robert Goldin

Rob Goldin is Reader in Liver and GI Pathology at Imperial College and Lead Clinician for Cellular Pathology at the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He has a long standing interest in the histopathology of chronic viral hepatitis and in the design of trials for their treatment.

 

Prof Mark Harris

Prof Will Irving

Professor Will Irving is a clinical virologist at the University of Nottingham/NUH NHS Trust. His main interest is in the clinical virology of hepatitis C virus infection. He is chair of the Trent cohort study of patients infected with HCV, established in 1992, and of the Department of Health Advisory Group on Hepatitis.

 

Dr Michael Jacobs

Mr Pramen Maulayah

Pramen is a Clinical Nurse Specialist. He joined the Liver Unit at Kings College Hospital in 1995, where he has worked as a nurse in all areas of liver disease (hepatology wards, liver intensive therapy unit, liver outpatients department) including clinical trials. Since 1999 he has dedicated most of his clinical work to viral hepatitis. He is the co-founder of BASLNF. He was the Secretary of the Hepatitis Nurse Specialist Forum between 2001 and 2005. He has represented the forums as a clinical expert and commentator on NICE appraisals for treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C viruses.

Dr Peter Mills

Dr Peter R Mills is Consultant Hepatologist at the Western Infirmary/Gartnavel General Hospital in Glasgow and Honorary Reader in Medicine in the University of Glasgow. He has a interest in clinical trials and the epidemiology of chronic virus hepatitis. He is currently President of the Scottish Society of Gastroenterology and Chairman of the Examining Board for the Specialist Certificate Examination in Gastroenterology.

Membership

Membership is open to all medically and scientifically qualified individuals with an interest in this area. Member subscription for the BVHG includes the benefits of BASL membership.

The British Association for The Study of The Liver kindly agreed to act as secretariat for the group but The British Viral Hepatitis Group has its own management board and will establish its own identity and agenda as time progresses.

Membership costs £40 per year (reduced to £20 per year for those who are in-training).
