During the course of developing a strategy for liver disease, it has become apparent that a significant proportion of people in
correctional institutions may be unaware that they are at risk of developing liver disease. Martin Lombard, National Clinical Director for Liver Disease, is keen to promote the idea that hepatologists should get more active in prisons and should push to develop outreach hepatitis services.
BASL and BVHG also back this idea and link in to correctional institutions. There are several locations where it has been achieved.
The Health Protection Agency produce a quarterly newsletter ‘Infection Inside: the prison infectious disease quarterly’, which is available online. The July issue if available now:
