The British Association for the Study of the Liver has issued a statement urging members who have had difficulty in gaining permission from their deanery to undertake out of programme research or training to contact them so that the Association can collate evidence before taking it up with deaneries and the other stakeholders.
Dr Mark Hudson, Training and Education lead at BASL said, “BASL supports the value and importance of out of programme training and research.
"We are aware of concerns expressed by trainees recently in Gastroenterology. Similar concerns have been raised within other specialities.
"As a starting point we need to have a clearer picture of the extent of the problem in Hepatology around the country.
“BASL would appreciate members coming forward with specific details of where deaneries are being less supportive in granting out of programme time.
“BASL will then be better placed to support and ensure that where there is a clear vocational benefit, trainees are not prevented from taking up these valuable opportunities.”
