British Association for the Study of the Liver - Joining
BASL is a multi-disciplinary society involving scientists and clinicians in both training and substantitative posts. It has approximately 400 members, and organises an annual meeting in September (usually the second week).
The annual meeting normally consists of both clinical and basic science symposia, two state of the art talks, update lectures on contentious issues as well as selected oral and poster presentations. In addition, at the annual meeting, BASL Travel awards are given to BASL members who are below status of Senior Lecturer or Consultant to allow presentation of high-quality UK liver research at International meetings, such as the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease. Members who are below the status of Senior Lecturer or consultant are also eligible to apply for the prestigious Dame Sheila Sherlock Award. This is the top research award presented annually by BASL to an emerging researcher in the field of liver disease after open competition and judged by the BASL committee based on submission of a one page summary of research and achievements plus references. Applications are usually submitted to the BASL Committee three months prior to the annual meeting. Details of previous winners are posted on the Dame Sheila Sherlock Award page.
